Press TV’s Live Twitter Coverage of Event in Britain Causes Controversy
Live coverage of a Labour Party event in Britain by the Press TV Twitter account has become controversial.
On Thursday, Labour MP Joan Ryan planned a vote of no confidence in Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of Labour Party, which was defeated by 94 to 92 votes. Press TV’s Twitter account was the only media that offered live coverage of the event.
Now a group of Labour Party members has requested an investigation into this matter, of how the reporter of a TV channel which is banned in Britain, was allowed to attend the event and publish photos and videos through live Tweets.
The party sessions are not open to reporters and even Joan Ryan did not publish any photo of the event in her Twitter account.
The channel’s activities have been banned in the UK since 2012 after a lawsuit by the journalist Maziar Bahari. In 2010 Press TV – which has close ties to the Islamic Republic – broadcast Bahari’s forced confessions. After his return to Britain, Bahari sued the channel for broadcasting confessions that were taken under “torture” and “death threats”.
Because of the lawsuit, Press TV was primarily fined 100000 pounds. In January 2012, they were banned from work and broadcasting in the UK. During the Bahari’s case proceedings, it had become evident that the network was receiving orders from Tehran.
Now high-level Labour party officials are asking how is it that this TV channel was able to cover a party session behind closed doors, when in fact it is not even allowed to work in Britain.
