Protesters hung Iraqi flags from Iranian consulate in Karbala
Iran’s consul general in Iraq’s Karbala city denied the reports that claimed the Iraqi protesters had pulled down the Iranian flag from the consulate and said: “The protesters just hung an Iraqi flag on the back of our building.”
In an interview with an Iranian state-owned media, Hosseinian denied an attack on Iran’s consulate, but claimed that some groups such as Ba'athists and foreign countries have infiltrated the protests.”
In the past few days, Iraqi protesters have tried to take their protests to Baghdad’s Green Zone where most government buildings and foreign embassies are located, but where blocked by security forces.
The spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry on Saturday announced that the Islamic Republic supports the demands of Iraqi people that have been mentioned in the statements made by religious figures and the prime minister.
According to the media, Iraqi citizens have repeatedly protested the influence and intervention of Iranian political and military (IRGC) in Iraq’s political structure and burned the Iranian flag during their protests.
Meanwhile, the Twitter page of Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic regime of Iran claimed that the protests are the work of “enemies who want to divide but were not able to, and their conspiracy will not work.”
Foreign Minister Zarif also tweeted: “Some tried to exploit these concerns, but they are a small minority and not the representatives of Iraqi people.”
According to the United Nations, so far over 60 have been killed and 2500 injured during the protests in Iraq
