Red Cross Denies Zarif’s Claim About Sanctions Impeding Humanitarian Aid to Iran
The International Red Cross denied the remarks attributed to the president of this organization by of Javad Zarif, the foreign minister of the Islamic republic, about the US sanctions impeding the flood-relief aid.
The International Red Cross announced that Peter Maurer’s address to the security council was regarding sanctions affecting humanitarian aid in general and never mentioned a specific country.
A Red Cross official told Radio Farda that their representative is closely cooperating with Iran’s Hilal Ahmar (Red Crescent), and if so required, the Red Cross is ready to explore all possibilities with its Iranian counterparts.
He stated that the Red Cross does not face any limitation in providing humanitarian aid to Iran.
According to this Red Cross official, Peter Maurer had told the security council that the United States has imposed more sanctions against individuals and institutions than any other country.
However, foreign minister Javad Zairf claimed that the United States has blocked all the bank accounts of Iran’s Red Crescent. He claimed that Peter Maurer had said that due to the U.S sanctions, Iran’s Red Crescent cannot receive any financial aid.
