U.S sanctions Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization and its president

US Treasury Department announced that it has added Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization and its president Ali Akbar Salehi to the list of sanctions on Thursday.

According to Reuters, the sanctions will impact Iran’s nuclear program since the organization oversees the program’s operations including the purchase of parts and equipment.

Russian, Chinese, and European companies will still be allowed to cooperate with Iran’s nuclear program.

After the United States exited the nuclear deal also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018 and reimposed sanctions against Iran, some non-American companies were exempt from sanctions and allowed to continue their cooperation with Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, including Arak, Tehran, and Bushehr plants.

According to one diplomat: “The Treasury and State Department had a disagreement over the issue. The Treasury won.”

The diplomat added that the United States has exempted the Bushehr reactor because the Russian company that works with it also provides fuel for American nuclear plants.

As the Islamic Republic of Iran ended its cooperation with the JCPOA and began uranium enrichment, the United States ended the sanction exemptions for Fordo nuclear plant.
