The US Secretary of Treasury announced that President Trump has issued an executive order sanctioning the Turkish ministers of Defense, State, and Energy and Natural Resources. It was also announced that two ministries of Defense and Energy and Natural Resources have also been targeted by sanctions separately.

Secretary Steven Mnuchin stated in a press conference on Monday that the sanctions against Turkey are very strong.

Hours before the announcement of sanctions against Turkey, President Trump issued a statement regarding Turkey’s military operation in Syria which said: “I am fully prepared to swiftly destroy Turkey's economy if Turkish leaders continue down this dangerous and destructive path.”

The president of the United States also announced that he is “immediately” stopping a trade negotiation with Turkey which is valued at about $100 billion, and he will raise steel tariffs back to 50% if Turkey does not cease its assault on Syria.

 President Trump also said that Turkey’s military operation threatens the peace, security, and stability of the region. According to Trump, the United States and its allies fully liberated the areas that ISIS controlled, and Turkey must not endanger this achievement.

The US president also announced that American troops will be evacuated from northern Syria, but a small number will remain at a border base between Syria and Iraq in order to prevent the return of ISIS.

The sanctions are being imposed just after Vice President Mike Pence announced in a press conference on Monday that President Trump has spoken with his Turkish counterpart, President Erdogan and asked him for an immediate ceasefire.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a critic of Trump’s decision to pull US troops out of Syria said in an interview on Tuesday that there is bipartisan support in the house for sanction on Turkey.
