According to the state-owned Fars News, there was a fire Shahid Tondgooyan petrochemical plant in Khuzestan province at 5:15 pm on Sunday. The report claims that decanters at a petrochemical facility in southwest Iran caught fire due to a hot oil leak.

Hamid Kiayi, the head of Tondgooyan’s public relations told Fars: “Due to the weather conditions of the region in the summer and the high temperature these days, the likelihood of such incidents occurring is very high.”

“Due to the climate of the region in the Summer and the high temperature the risk of such incidents is very high,” added Kiayi. "The situation is under control, the production at Tondgooyan complex is not stopped and the complex is operating normally".

The petrochemical complex was established on April 26, 1998, in Khuzestan province, on an area of ​​34 hectares, to produce plastic products (PET) and terephthalic acid (PTA)

This is the latest in the series of fires and explosions in Iran’s petrochemical plants and nuclear sites. In the biggest incident, an advanced centrifuge production plant witnessed a heavy explosion which will delay Iran’s nuclear program for at least a year.
