Rouhani to Macron: US sanctions against Iran are economic terrorism

In a phone conversation with President Macron on Tuesday, Iran’s Hassan Rouani expressed content with the results of his representative’s visit to France.

Rouhani also demanded a credit line for Iran from Europe, and warned: “As time goes by and we take the next steps in scaling down our compliance with the nuclear deal, it will become more difficult for both sides to return to the starting point."

Macron in response told Rouhani that “France will do all it can to protect Iran’s interests in the nuclear deal and to normalize Tehran’s economic relations with other countries.”

Rouhani also talked about The United States’ policy of maximum pressure toward Iran and called the US sanction against the Islamic Republic “economic terrorism”.

President Macron described US sanctions as “unilateral and unacceptable”, and said: “In order to de-escalate the tensions in the region and achieve a positive result, we must cooperate faster in choosing the appropriate and fair solution.”

Last week, Abbas Araghchi, the deputy of policies at Iran’s foreign ministry traveled to France to deliver Rouhani’s “letter” to Macron. The content of the letter was not revealed to the media.

The spokesman for the foreign ministry of the Islamic Republic said: “The French visited Iran a few times after the recent events in the region. They presented some plans that we felt there was nothing new or significant in them.”

He continued: “But since Iran believes the diplomacy window must remain open, we reviewed the plans and developed a plan of our own as well and this plan was delivered to President Macron by Mr. Araghchi, and now they are reviewing it.”
