EU’s chief diplomat strongly condemns Khamenei’s comment about Israel
The High Representative of the European Union on Foreign Policy Josep Borrell on Thursday condemned a pledge by the Islamic Republic regime of Iran's leader Ali Khamenei to support any country that would fight Israel, and stressed that this comment is “a threat to international peace and security”.
On Wednesday, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran will support any nation or group that fights Israel, several hours after he published a cartoon calling for a "final solution" to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. On his English, Persian, and Arabic Twitter accounts, Khamenei stated: Eliminating the Zionist regime doesn't mean eliminating Jews… This is eliminating Israel.”
He later added: “We will support and assist any nation or any group anywhere who opposes and fights the Zionist regime, and we do not hesitate to say this."
Josep Borrell, the EU high representative for foreign affairs, took to Twitter on Thursday after Khamenei's comments sparked angry responses from Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
Borrell tweeted: "I condemn in the strongest possible terms the call by the Iranian Supreme Leader @khamenei_ir to fight Israel."
"This is a threat to international peace and security. The security of Israel is of paramount importance and the EU will stand at its side," he declared, using Khamenei’s Twitter handle.
