Iran's foreign ministry Saturday harshly criticized Bahrain for normalizing relations with Israel, as the second Gulf country to do so after the United Arab Emirates established ties with the Jewish state last month.

President Donald Trump announced in a tweet on Friday that Bahrain and Israel have agreed to normalize relations. There were previous reports about the upcoming announcement on the agreement between Israel and Bahrain. 

In a joint statement, US, Bahrain, and Israel described the normalization as a “historic breakthrough” for the process of peace in the Middle East. 

The three countries stated that they will continue their efforts to achieve a just, comprehensive, and enduring resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to enable the Palestinian people to realize their full potential. 

However, Iran, Israel's arch-foe in the region, called Bahrain's decision a "treacherous act" toward the Palestinian people's decades-long struggle for their rights." The foreign ministry statement said, Bahrain instead of gaining legitimacy from its own people has turned to Israel for support.

The Islamic Republic of Iran's has tumultuous relations with Bahrain, which has a majority Shiite population and is seen by Iran as a country where it should hold influence. Bahrain has accused Tehran of interfering in its internal affairs and threatening its security. 

Bahrain has also accepted the invitation of President Trump to join Israel and the UAE in a signing ceremony at the Whitehouse on Tuesday. 

Trump's son-in-law and senior White House adviser, Jared Kushner, who has played a pivotal role in both agreements hailed the agreements as "the culmination of four years of great work" by Trump administration.

"We're seeing the beginning of a new Middle East, and the president has really secured alliances and partners in trying to pursue that," Kushner said.

Saudi Arabia has also agreed to allow planes from and to Israel pass through its airspace, but has decided not to normalize relations with Israel at this time.
