IRGC: We have seized a British tanker in Strait of Hormuz
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it has detained a British tanker in Strait of Hormuz.
“On Friday afternoon of July 19, the British tanker Stena Impero was detained by the IRGC Navy forces for violating the maritime law while passing through the Strait of Hormuz,” says the statement released by the IRGC.
According to the statement, after the tanker was detained, it was guided toward the coast and delivered to Ports and Maritime Organization to oversee the legal process.”
A spokesperson for Britain’s Ministry of Defense said: “We are urgently seeking further information and assessing the situation following reports of an incident in the Gulf.”
Earlier this month, British forces seized an Iranian supertanker in Gibraltar for trying to deliver oil to Syria, which is a violation of EU sanctions against that country.
Iran has demanded the tanker to be released, calling the seizure “piracy”, while many Iranian military officials and the leader of the Islamic Republic promised retaliation.
After the seizure of Iranian tanker in Gibraltar, Iran tried to seize a British tanker but failed due to the presence of a British frigate.
