The spokesperson for the foreign ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran demanded the Iraqi government’s response to the Iraqi protesters who set the Iranian consulate in Najaf on fire.

The website of the Islamic Republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote on Thursday: “While expressing disgust at this aggression against the Islamic Republic consulate in the holy city of Najaf, Mousavi demanded the Iraqi government’s responsible, swift, and decisive response to the culprits and aggressors.”

“Iran’s extreme objection was expressed to Iraqi ambassador in Tehran,” the statement continued.

Mousavi had previously asked the Iraqi officials to take the necessary security measures to protect Iran’s diplomatic offices in Iraq.

Hossein Abdollahian, the special assistant in international affairs to the speaker of the parliament claimed in a tweet that ISIS forces were involved in the attack: “ISIS forces wearing civilian Iraqi clothing with support from the US and Saudi Arabia have come to the streets of Baghdad and intend to desecrate the holy cities of Karbala and Najaf.”

He claimed that Israel, the United States, and Saudi Arabia have targeted “Iraq’s democracy and independence.”

On Wednesday night, Iraqi protesters attacked the Iranian consulate in Najaf city and after a clash with the security forces, they pushed the forces back and set fire to the consulate building. The protesters took down the Islamic Republic sign from the top of the embassy and took it with them. They also confiscated some computers and documents from the consulate.
