New attack on two oil tankers in Oman Sea
On Thursday, June 13, two oil tankers were attacked near the Strait of Hormuz in the Oman Sea. This is the second attack on oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz in less than a month.
The attack happened while the Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo was meeting with the leaders of Iran to deliver a message from President Trump in the hope of easing tensions between the two countries.
Details are yet to be released regarding the attacks which Iran’s foreign minister Zarif has called “more than suspicious”. Most countries in the region and the United States have stated that the previous attacks against the tankers were most likely orchestrated by Iran and its proxy militia groups.
Iran has repeatedly threatened that if Iranian oil export is shut down due to sanctions, no other country’s oil will pass the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Iran’s state TV, the cargo of one of the tankers was unharmed, but the other tanker will sink soon. Iran has also announced that it has rescued 44 sailors.
Bloomberg reported that as a result of the attacks, the price of Brent oil crude increased as much as 4.5 percent and stocks were down in Saudi Arabia and Dubai.
