Trump: G7 will discuss Iran's ballistic missile program
President Trump says that Iran’s ballistic missile program will be discussed during the G7 summit.
In a press conference during the G& summit, President Trump told the reporters on Monday that his administration is not after regime change in Iran and wants a strong Iran. He added that Iranian people have been forced to live in unacceptable conditions.
He also stated that he was not surprised by the arrival of foreign minister Zarif to the summit but emphasized that he had no plans for talking to Zarif and it is too early for such a meeting.
President Trump has repeatedly expressed his willingness to negotiate with Iranian officials, but his offer has not been accepted.
The leader Ali Khamenei and high-ranking officials of the Islamic Republic have regularly claimed that the United States seeks regime change in Iran, comparing negotiation with the US to “poison”.
However, on Monday morning, President Rouhani declared: “If I know that by meeting with someone, my country gets rebuilt and people’s problems get solved, I will not refuse to do so.”
With rising tensions in recent months, President Macron of France has been actively trying to de-escalate the situation and has had regular conversations with his Iranian counterpart. Macron has announced that he has some suggestions on resolving the issues between Iran and the US.
In recent months, with the sabotage of several tankers in the Persian Gulf and shooting down an American drone, tensions rose to an all-time high in the region.
President Macron has made some suggestions including lifting some sanctions if Iran fully complies with its commitments to the nuclear deal.
The United States so far has not responded to these suggestions.
