US once again called for extending arms embargo on Iran

While referring to the confiscation of an Iranian shipment of weapons for Houthis in Yemen, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called for the extension of the arms embargo on Iran.

On Friday, February 14, Secretary Pompeo tweeted: “The U.S. Navy interdicted 358 Iranian-made missiles plus other weapons components on their way to the Houthis in Yemen.”

He added: “This is another example of the world’s largest state sponsor of terror the Islamic Republic of Iran continuing to defy the UN Security Council.”

In a second Tweet, Pompeo stated: “The world must reject Iran’s violence and act now to renew the expiring UN arms embargo on Iran.”

UN Resolution 2231 which was passed during the nuclear deal between Iran and the world powers in 2015 bans Iran from buying weapons for five years. The embargo ends in September of 2010 and the United States has repeatedly warned about the expiration of the embargo.

Iran has been accused of sending weapons to the Houthi militia in Yemen by the United Nations and other countries.

Saudi Arabia has also announced that “Iran continues to smuggle weapons for Houthis of Yemen in order to thwart the peaceful resolutions.”
