Zarif congratulates Johnson: Iran does not seek confrontation

The foreign minister of the Islamic Republic, Mohammad Javad Zarif, congratulated Boris Johnson on winning the race for leadership of the Tory party of Britain and his subsequent appointment as prime minister.

“I congratulate my former counterpart, Boris Johnson on becoming UK PM. Iran does not seek confrontation. But we have 1500 miles of Persian Gulf coastline. These are our waters & we will protect them.” Zarif tweeted.

Today Boris Johnson won the party election with over 92000 votes. The leader of the party will replace Theresa May as the prime minister.

During his election campaign, Johnson had promised “very harsh” measures in dealing with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

He had also promised to protect British ships in international waters.

Tensions have risen between the Islamic Republic and the United Kingdom after British forces detained an Iranian tanker in Gibraltar for violating EU sanctions against Syria, which led to Iran seizing a British tanker in return near the Strait of Hormuz.
