Zarif: Europeans Are Trying to Appease Trump
Mohammad Javad Zarif, the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic says that the European countries are trying to appease President Donald Trump.
While referring to the joint letter of three European countries to the secretary general of the United Nations regarding Iran’s missile program, Zarif Tweeted on Wednesday: “A year after US' unlawful abrogation of JCPOA, Europe can't muster the political will to defy US' economic terrorism. Not even by setting up a single banking channel for humanitarian aid. E3 are instead busy appeasing Donald Trump by pressuring UN over our defensive capabilities.”
On Tuesday, UK, France, and Germany sent a joint letter to UN secretary-general António Guterres, demanding a full report on Iran’s missile program.
In this joint letter, Iran has been accused of violating resolution 2231 of the security council by launching satellite-carrier rockets into space and unveiling two new ballistic missiles.
The 2231 resolution of the UN security council which was passed in 2015 asks the Islamic Republic to stop developing and testing ballistic missiles that can carry nuclear warheads for eight years.
European countries had previously expressed their concern about Iran’s missile program. In February, the European Union members accused Tehran of trying to increase the range and precision of its ballistic missiles and increasing its missile tests.
Iran says the resolution only asks Iran not to develop its missile program and it is not binding.
