German foreign minister warns Iran about reinstating UN sanctions
Heiko Maas, the foreign minister of Germany said on Monday that Germany, France, and Britain must be prepared to consider reinstating international sanctions on Iran due to its breach of the 2015 nuclear deal.
After entering Brussels on Monday to meet with other foreign ministers of EU member countries, Maas told the reporters that he will be talking with his French and British counterparts to discuss the next steps in dealing with Iran.
Maas stated that Germany is very concerned about Iran’s recent decision to further step away from the 2015 nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan on Action (JCPOA) by injecting uranium gas into its advanced IR-6 centrifuges.
“Iran must finally return to its commitments, otherwise we will reserve the right to use all mechanisms specified in the deal,” Maas said, referring to the mechanism in the deal (Snap-Back) that would automatically reimpose all UN sanctions in case of a breach by Iran.
However, the spokesman for the foreign ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Abbas Mousavi, claimed on Sunday that “the Europeans cannot use the Snap-Back mechanism.”
