Iran Summons the French Ambassador
The foreign ministry of the Islamic Republic summoned the French ambassador in protest to the recent tweet by the French ambassador in Washington regarding Iran’s obligation to prove the peaceful nature of its nuclear program after the JCPOA limit.
The chairman of JCPOA execution, Hossein Sadat Meidani, said the tweet made by the French ambassador to the United States, Gérard Araud, is “absolutely unacceptable” and demanded an explanation from the French government.
Gérard Araud tweeted on April 13: “It’s false to say that at the expiration of the JCPOA, Iran will be allowed to enriching uranium. Under the NPT and its additional protocol, it will have to prove, under strict monitoring, that its nuclear activities are civilian."
He is referring to the period of 10 years when according to JCPOA Iran must stop enrichment of Uranium.
Meidani warned that if the statement is the official position of the French government, it is in clear violation of the goals and articles of JCPOA.
He warned that the Islamic Republic will reserve the right to an appropriate response. He did not elaborate on the nature of the response.
According to the statement issued by the foreign ministry, the French ambassador to Iran was unaware of Gérard Araud’s tweets.
Many western officials had previously raised concern about ending all monitoring on Iran's nuclear program after 2025, and it was one of the main reasons for President Trump's decision to exit the JCPOA last May.
