Senior German Diplomat in Tehran to Save the Nuclear Deal

According to Reuters, a German mediator has traveled to Tehran in order to calm the tensions between Iran and the United States and to negotiate about the nuclear deal (JCPOA).

Jens Ploetner who was previously part of the German team for the negotiations between the five western powers and Iran, has entered Tehran on Thursday to meet with Iranian officials.

Ploetner is the political director of the foreign ministry of Germany.

A German diplomat told Reuters: “The main goal of this trip is to save the JCPOA.

Iran recently announced that it will cease compliance with some of its voluntary commitments to the JCPOA unless the sanctions are removed.

The United States is trying to decrease Iran’s gas and oil export to zero. Iran’s oil export has currently dropped under 500 thousand barrels a day.

The diplomat who remains anonymous continued: “The situation in the middle east and the Persian Gulf are serious. Tensions can rise… in these conditions, dialogue is very important.”
