Germany welcomes Washington’s willingness to negotiate with Tehran
The foreign minister of Germany, Heiko Maas, welcomed what he called signs that indicate Washington is willing to negotiate with Tehran on the nuclear deal and asked all countries to play their part in getting out of the current gridlock.
Before the meeting of European foreign ministers in Helsinki, Maas said: “We welcome the results of the G7 summit. Meaning the willingness of the United States to negotiate…Everyone including Iran must participate in de-escalating the tensions in the region and we also want to play our role.”
He added: "Everything that contributes to a de-escalation is helpful. No side wants a war. We need to look into the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and we want to find as great as possible unity in the European Union."
Federica Mogherini, the head European Union’s foreign policy also stated that the EU supports negotiations between Iran and the United States, but the nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) must be maintained.
After the G7 summit on Monday, President Trump once again emphasized the necessity of preventing Iran from having nuclear weapons but also said that under the right circumstances, he would be willing to meet with his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rouhani.
Rouhani also at first welcomed the idea, saying: “If I know by meeting and negotiating with someone the country prospers and people’s problems are resolved, I will not hesitate.”
But he walked back his comments yesterday after a backlash from Islamic Republic officials and said he would only negotiate if the sanctions are lifted.
Mohammad Javad Zarif, the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic also stated that any negotiation depends on the United States returning to the nuclear deal.
